Carol crossed the room slowly; she hesitated a moment as she stood in front of me and then suddenly she swooped down and landed in my lap. She turned and, taking my face between her hands, stared into my eyes for a moment. And then she kissed me.

It lasted for a long time.

“Joe,” she said. “What is it, Joe? What’s happened to us? What’s happened to you? For a week now, since that awful Saturday night, you’ve been going around like a man who is half dead.”

I didn’t say anything. There wasn’t anything I could say.

She snuggled closer.

“I still love you, Joe,” she said, her voice barely audible. “There’s no one else. There never was and there never will be.”

“I love you, Carol,” I said. I wanted to go on, tell her the same things she was telling me. But my voice choked up and I couldn’t. I was remembering what had happened with Rosalie Carver.

“You have to believe me; have faith in me,” Carol said.

“I believe you,” I said. “And I love you, Carol. I don’t know what comes over me. It’s just that . . .”

She put her fingers across my lips. “It’s that job of yours, Joe,” Carol said. “Oh, can’t you understand? Don’t you see it? I know you like the work. I know that you are a good cop. But, darling, it isn’t for you. You think that it’s only the money I’m interested in, but that isn’t true. It’s that I think there are other things, more important things which you could be doing. I want to be proud of you. I want. .

I pulled her closer and this time I put my fingers across her lips and when she stopped talking, I sealed her lips with my own. After a long time I spoke.

“All right, honey,” I said. “I’m going to do what you want me to do. I’ll quit the job. But you just have to give me a little time. Say six months. Six months from today, I promise you that I’ll quit. I’ll hand in my resignation.”

She leaned back so that she could look into my eyes. She started to say something, but I didn’t let her talk.

“There will be no regrets,” I said quickly. “I’m doing it because I want to do it. You’re a lot more important to me than any job. And I haven’t been fair. I know that. I shouldn’t ask you to live on what a cop makes, not when you don’t have to. And I just can’t see myself living off your money. So there is only one thing to do. I’ll get into something where I can make the kind of money I have to have.”

“What . . .”

“Law,” I said. “I’ll start now, while I’m still on the force. I can get into night school for a refresher course. You see . . .”

“Oh, darling,” she said. “Darling, couldn’t you just go in now, right away, and quit? Couldn’t you . . .
